Two index formulas for operators defined by infinite band matrices are proved. These results may be interpreted as a generalization of the classical theorem of M. G. Krein for orthogonal polynomials. The proofs are based on dichotomy and nonstationary inertia theory.

The extension problem for closed symmetric operators with a gap is studied. A new kind of parametrization of extensions (the so-called Krein model) is developed. The notion of a singular operator plays the key role in our approach. We give the explicit description of extensions and establish the spectral properties of extended operators.

### Szego-Kolmogorov-Krein theorems on weighted trigonometrical approximation and Carleman-type relations

In view of the well-known Szego - Kolmogorov - Krein theorems on weighted approximation by the functions with semibounded spectrum (on a circle or a line), an efficient construction is suggested, which enables one to realize these approximations. It is based on relations similar to the Carleman tor-mula reconstructing an analytic function in terms its trace on the boundary of the domain of definition.
